The image: bamboo pipes channelling a spring; plans and hopes are very auspicious. The verdict: the water flows on without end; whatever a good person seeks brings joy.
The great Tang general Guo Ziyi quelled the An Lushan rebellion, and Emperor Daizong married Princess Shengping to his son Guo Ai. When the young couple quarrelled and Guo Ai said rash things, Guo Ziyi rushed to apologise, but the emperor laughed: to be head of a family you must be a little deaf and blind. The Guo family enjoyed honour for generations.
