The image: a boat in rapids; keep to the old and wait. The verdict: launching in fast water is dangerous; wait for the right moment. For plans, now is not the time to act.
The Han writer Yang Xiong was brilliant, yet when Wang Mang usurped the throne he took office under the new regime. Centuries later Zhu Xi recorded him as "Wang Mang's official Yang Xiong", and his reputation never recovered. Setting out on a dangerous current can cost more than it gains.
