Gao Huaide, a founding general of the Song, helped Zhao Kuangyin take the throne at Chenqiao. He later married the emperor's sister, the Princess of Yan, became imperial son-in-law, and campaigned against Liao alongside the Yang generals. His rise rested on earlier merit and loyalty.
