The image: a candle flickering in the wind; keep to the usual and all is well. The verdict: settle somewhere quiet and wait; stirring things up is no blessing; keeping to the old is best.
As the Han collapsed, Guan Ning withdrew to Liaodong, where he taught and won such renown that many worthy men followed him. Cao Cao sent envoys to bring him into office, but could never persuade him. Content in retirement, he lived out his life in peace.
