Win your family's understanding first.
From Mencius on Shun's filial piety: without the parents' goodwill one is not fully a person; without obeying them, not a true son. Family opinion matters greatly here; win your parents' understanding and blessing first.
| Single | Let your family meet the person and hear your elders' view. |
|---|---|
| Dating | If family has doubts, talk patiently rather than clash. |
| Married | After marriage, care for both sets of parents' feelings. |
From Mencius: Shun served his parents so devotedly that even his stubborn father was finally pleased; Mencius says one who cannot please one's parents is not truly a person, and one who cannot follow them is not truly a son.
