What it means

Marriage is the heart of a family; treat it with care.

"The wife is the mistress of family rites": the one who holds the family together and must be honoured. Marriage is the foundation of the home; treat it seriously and with mutual respect, and value your partner's contribution.

Original context

From the Book of Rites: Confucius told Duke Ai of Lu that the wife presides with her husband over the family rites; how could one not respect her? A gentleman honours his wife and values marriage.
