The image: throwing oneself from a cliff; go with the flow and all is well. The verdict: no fish on the table, yet content in plain living; wait for your time and reward will come; weigh things wisely.
In the Tang, Xue Rengui enlisted three times and was only ever made a cook. When Emperor Taizong was cornered by an enemy general, Xue charged in and saved him; he was made marshal, led the eastern campaign and won great honours.
