Fan Ju of Wei accompanied the minister Xu Jia to Qi, was suspected of colluding with Qi, beaten nearly to death by Wei's chancellor and thrown in a privy. Friends rescued him; under a new name he went to Qin with an envoy, won King Zhao's trust with his strategy of befriending distant states and attacking near ones, became chancellor, and later retired in time to keep his good name.
