Source: Analects, "Yong Ye"

斯人也而有斯疾也
斯人也而有斯疾也

What it means

A good person with something that cannot be changed; consider honestly whether you can accept it.

Repeated twice, "such a man, yet such an illness" is a deep lament: a good person with something that cannot be changed. In love, see clearly the problem that cannot be avoided, decide whether you can accept it, and don't assume it will change by itself.

Guidance in love

SingleWhen you like someone, look at their difficulties as well as their strengths.
DatingThere is a hard problem; face it honestly and judge whether you can live with it.
MarriedAccept your partner's imperfections with understanding rather than blame.

Line by line

  1. 斯人也而有斯疾也
Such a good person, yet with such a flaw.
  2. 斯人也而有斯疾也
    (Repeated, deepening the regret.)

Original context

From the Analects: when the disciple Boniu fell gravely ill, Confucius visited, held his hand through the window and sighed: "We are losing him; it is fate! That such a man should have such an illness!" A lament for misfortune falling on a good person.
