Source: Mencius, "Gaozi II"
A match won by improper means is not worth having; keep to what is right.
A warning from Mencius: if you could only get a wife by climbing a neighbour's wall and seizing his daughter, would you? A match gained by improper means is not worth having. Keep boundaries and respect, and don't cross lines out of longing.
| Single | Don't rush; only an honest courtship lasts. |
|---|---|
| Dating | Respect the other's wishes and boundaries; don't hold on by force. |
| Married | Even in marriage, treat each other with courtesy; avoid domineering. |
From Mencius: asked whether ritual or appetite matters more, Mencius replied: if you could only eat by twisting your brother's arm, or only get a wife by climbing the neighbour's wall and seizing his daughter, would you do it? Right conduct outweighs desire.
