Matchmaker Oracle · Lot 6

Source: After Yuan Zhen, "Bright Moon on the Fifteenth"

風弄竹聲只道金珮響
月移花影疑是玉人來

What it means

Every rustle sounds like their footsteps. Longing runs deep; wait with patience.

Wind in the bamboo sounds like jade pendants; moving flower shadows seem like the beloved arriving: the image of longing. Your heart is set on someone, but they may not have come yet. Wait patiently, and don't let imagination replace real conversation.

Guidance in love

SingleYou already have someone in mind; find a chance to say so.
DatingIf their feelings are unclear, talk more and guess less.
MarriedIf apart or distant, reach out and share that you miss them.

Line by line

  1. 風弄竹聲只道金珮響
Wind stirs the bamboo; you take it for jingling gold pendants
  2. 月移花影疑是玉人來
moonlight shifts the flower shadows; you think your beloved is here.

Original context

After Yuan Zhen's line "flower shadows stir on the wall; I think my beloved has come", said to be the note Cui Yingying sent Zhang Sheng in "The Story of Yingying", the source of The Western Chamber. It captures the illusions of waiting for a lover.

Text: the 100-lot Matchmaker (Yue Lao) oracle used in Taiwan. Most lots quote classical texts; sources were checked against the originals, obvious copying errors corrected, and uncertain sources marked as such.
