Guidance in love

SingleLove will come by chance; stay open and let it happen.
DatingYou came together naturally; don't mind outside opinions.
MarriedYour marriage was a lucky fate; treasure it.

Line by line

  1. 因荷而得藕
From the lotus comes the root (how does one find a partner?)
  2. 有杏不須梅
With apricots, no need for plums (with luck, no matchmaker).

Original context

A folk pun couplet: lotus (he) sounds like "how", root (ou) like "partner", apricot (xing) like "luck", plum (mei) like "matchmaker". On the surface it speaks of plants; beneath, "how to find a partner? With luck, no matchmaker needed."

Text: the 100-lot Matchmaker (Yue Lao) oracle used in Taiwan. Most lots quote classical texts; sources were checked against the originals, obvious copying errors corrected, and uncertain sources marked as such.
